Empowering Women - 3 to Follow

What We Can Learn From These 3 Empowering Women

When you think about inspirational women, a dozen success stories come to mind. From Michelle Obama to Serena Williams, from Hillary Clinton to Amelia Earhart, from Mother Teresa to Anne Frank – they are all examples of what a woman can achieve in the male-dominated world. In honor of International Women’s Day, I want to talk about three empowering females that have made a significant impact on the modern world and continue to change it every day.

Malala Yousafzai

The youngest person on this list, Malala was also the youngest person ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. When she received it in 2014, she was only 17 years old. Malala is a Pakistani activist promoting education for girls. At the tender age of 14, she was a victim of an attempted assassination by the fighter of the Taliban. Despite the odds, the girl survived the head wound and continued her work.

Malala is only 22, but her movement for female education has already gained international support, and she has become the most prominent citizen of Pakistan. However, she remains unpopular among the Taliban sympathizers for her opposition to their policy. Malala is a prime example of how even the most desperate situations can be turned into a success story that draws attention to the struggles of the most unprotected population groups.

Anne Boden

When you think of the Member of the Order of the British Empire award, women rarely come to mind. However, Anne Boden was awarded the medal in 2018 at the age of 58. You might not know her, but you have undoubtedly heard of Starling Bank, one of the first challenger digital-only banks. With Anne as a CEO, Starling Bank has become the best British bank and the best current account provider, according to British Bank Awards. Anne managed to get her company to the top while battling predominately male competition in both Tech and Finance markets. Under her supervision, Starling Bank beat other digital-only banks headed by male CEOs in their 20s.

Anne Boden founded Starling Bank at 54, disrupting the stereotypical image of a FinTech startup founder. At 59, she published a book named The Money Revolution to help readers manage their finances in the digital age. Anne is living proof that age and gender mean nothing in the face of passion and expertise. If she could create the most successful bank in Britain, you should be able to achieve your dreams, even if it takes a while.

J.K. Rowling

It would be tough to find a person who hasn’t heard about Harry Potter. What started as a list of ideas on the back of a napkin turned into a best-selling book series that helped Joanne Rowling build a billion-dollar empire. However, J.K. was not always as successful as she is now. Some speculate she used her nom de plume to mask the fact that she was female to finally get her first Harry Potter book accepted by a publishing house. Joanne was broke and suffered numerous rejections before she finally got a deal. Still, the series did not gain traction until the movie adaptation by Warner Brothers.

Despite the controversy of recent years, including the latest addition to the series and Fantastic Beast movies, J.K. Rowling is still one of the most successful and renowned female novelists of all time. We have her to thank Hermione Granger, one of the most inspirational fictional female characters of the 21 century. Joanne is the epitome of persistence and determination. If she could pursue her goal of publishing the series about the boy who lived, so can you get through your classes and achieve success.
